Students had to make a “group plan”, work together and use problem solving skills to build a Christmas Tree. It could be 2D or 3D but they had to use all of their cups. They learned that the larger the group size the more important it is to communicate and cooperate!
If your last name begins with the letters A-K your child will be performing at the afternoon and evening concert on Wednesday, December 14. Students with last names L-Z will perform on Thursday, December 15th.
You can attend either the afternoon or evening concert to watch your child, but your child will be expected to perform at both performances on their designated day. We have separated students based on numbers, so please attend on the day assigned to you.
Thank you to Nadene (Wyatt’s mom) for giving our class and Ms.DaCosta’s class such an engaging presentation on geology! The PowerPoint presentation, rock and mineral samples, posters and books were great visuals and made it interesting for everyone. Students were super excited to take home their own rock pet kits too!
Our class attended Agribition last week and had a wonderful time! We were all able to see livestock and a live rodeo, farm machinery, learn about plants and agriculture and visit a variety of exhibits!

As a staff we are proud of our school and our student accomplishments. However, we are always striving to make improvements and ensure we are working to support our students and ensure our school is an engaging environment. This afternoon the Grade 3s were invited to join a presentation from Elder Betty and Calvin Racette to learn about plants from a First Nations perspective.
Both the 2s and 3s were then treated to another special presenter, Sergeant Darren Finkeldey (Noah’s dad) from the Regina Police Service. He shared with us important safety information regarding strangers, described his uniform and purpose for all of his tools, and even gave students an opportunity to try on his bullet proof vest and get handcuffed. Students loved it! Thank you Mr.Finkeldey for visiting us, giving students each a water bottle and books and helping keep our community safe!
This morning students are sharing their travel adventures with us! They have completed travel journals to document their experience.
The creativity of children never ceases to amaze me. Fun was had this afternoon painting Halloween pumpkins. A huge thank you to the parent volunteers who helped make this activity a smashing success!
Last week we said goodbye to Tegen as she embarks on her new adventure in BC. We will miss having her in our classroom and school community, but wish her joy and success in her new community!
Making groups and using our skip counting skills help us to count large collections. Grade 2s are counting collections to 100 (some are doing 100+ to challenge themselves) and Grade 3s are counting collections up to 1000.

Our class has been using music lyrics as poetry to examine author’s meaning and the concept of themes. Once we figure out the author’s meaning we highlight the words and phrases in the song that are used to express the meaning. Last week we looked at Katy Perry’s “Roar” and Rachel Platten’s “fight song”. Words that came out to us were powerful, strength, taking control, finding their voice. Students also made the connection that both songs convey a similar message, hence the discovery of a common theme! Olivia, a student in our class was inspired by this and on her own time wrote her own songs that have a similar message. She recorded herself playing her guitar and sang “Supergirl” for us! I am so proud of her creativity. She has given me permission to share this on our blog.

As part of Education Week 2016 at W.S. Hawrylak School we will be hosting a special reading event for our Kindergarten to Grade 3 students and you’re invited!
On the morning of Wednesday, October 19th from 8:00-8:40 we hope that you can join your child to enjoy sitting down to muffins and books. The shared learning areas and library will be open for reading, as well as your child’s classroom to obtain their book boxes and reading materials. Siblings are welcome to enjoy the family reading as well!
If you are able to participate in this special literacy event please fill out the form that was sent home and via email and return it to Mrs.Rogers by Friday, October 14. This will help us in the organization of this event to make sure there is enough refreshments for everyone.

Last week Hawrylak School had our annual Terry Fox walk. Our class walked with our Learning Buddies, it was a perfect day for an afternoon stroll. Our class raised $93 (not including online donations!) to support cancer research. Thank you for your support!
Students have earned 200 positive class Dojo points, so they enjoyed an ice cream sundae party at lunch for dessert! I’m so proud of our class!
We will be using Class Dojo as a behaviour management tool in our classroom to reward positive student behaviour!
There are 4 ways this will benefit your child:
1. Individual points. You can see whether they are being on task, helpful, working hard, showing persistence or using teamwork throughout the day. You can also see when they make some not-so-good choices. A real-time reflection of their day.
For increments of 20 individual points, students get a prize from Mrs.Rogers’ prize bucket!
2. Class points. We are a classroom community. We succeed together and we lift one another up when we need to. Individual behaviours affect the entire class, which is reflected in our class points.
When our class earns 200 points collectively we will have an ice cream sundae party. 500 points will be a pizza party!
3. Group points. Student rows/groups can earn points towards choosing free-time activities. Group points are earned by “showing ready” after transition times and also during collaborative learning activities using teamwork.
4. You get an inside peek of your child’s school day and can praise them for their great behaviour at school!
All points will accumulate, except if students are in the red at the end of a day they start fresh the next day. Any days where students lose 5+ points or are in the negatives an email or call will be made home to have a conversation about their day and to encourage a conversation at home as to what can improve for the following day. We have an awesome class so I don’t anticipate making many calls home, and hope that you are able to follow your child’s progress to monitor how awesome they are doing!
